Political Risk Analyst & Sanctions Expert
I am a Diamond-Brown Senior Research Fellow for Economic Sanctions, Standards and Strategy at the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS).
Previously, I was a Visiting Senior Fellow at the Center on US Politics and Power at the Finnish Institute of International Affairs and a Senior Research Fellow at the Center for Eastern European Studies at the University of Zurich.
My research interests cover economic statecraft, international sanctions and energy politics, with a particular focus on the post-Soviet states. I have written extensively on Western sanctions towards Russia, energy security in Eurasia and Russia's political economy and foreign policy.
My publications have appeared in the IISS, Carnegie Moscow Center, CSS (ETH Zurich), European Council on Foreign Relations, Foreign Policy Research Institute, Atlantic Council, War on the Rocks, and The Kennan Institute. My research has been cited in The New York Times, Washington Post, Financial Times, Wall Street Journal, BBC, CNN, Bloomberg, Foreign Policy, and The Guardian. I have consulted government agencies, including the US State Department, the UK Foreign Office, House of Commons and the EU Commission, as well as the private sector on issues of sanctions and energy security.
I have held numerous prestigious fellowships, including from the Swiss Government, Swiss National Science Foundation, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Open Society Institute and DAAD. In 2020, I was selected as a GLOBSEC Young Leader and as a member of the European Leadership Network.
I hold a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Lucerne. I also conducted research at the University of Birmingham, University of Bern and Ritsumeikan University (Japan).
